Pixar Confirms Development of ‘Coco 2,’ Aiming for 2029 Release
Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved animated film Coco is in development at Pixar Animation Studios. The revelation came during the company’s shareholders meeting on March 20, 2025.
While the film is still in its early stages, Iger assured fans that Coco 2 will carry the same emotional depth, humor, and adventure that made the first installment a global success. The sequel will reunite key members of the original creative team, including directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina.
Released in 2017, Coco followed the journey of Miguel, a 12-year-old boy with a passion for music, who embarks on an extraordinary adventure in the Land of the Dead to uncover his family's legacy. The film was lauded for its heartfelt storytelling, cultural authenticity, and stunning visuals, earning over $814 million at the global box office. It also won several prestigious awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me.”
Coco was a landmark production for Pixar, featuring a predominantly Latino cast and deeply rooted in Mexican traditions. Its success solidified its place as one of the studio’s most culturally significant projects.
Although details on Coco 2 remain under wraps, the anticipated sequel is targeting a theatrical release in 2029. With Pixar’s legacy of delivering high-quality animated films, audiences can expect another moving and visually spectacular cinematic experience.
