First Lady Liza Marcos Lauds Filipino-Chinese Community for Economic and Cultural Contributions
MANILA, Philippines — First Lady Liza Marcos expressed her deep appreciation for the Filipino-Chinese community, acknowledging their significant role in driving the country’s economic and cultural development.
In a recent Instagram post, the First Lady extended her gratitude to the community for their continued involvement in trade and heritage preservation.
“A big thank you to our Filipino-Chinese community for always being part of our country’s trade and cultural growth,” she wrote.
She also commended their efforts in revitalizing Manila Chinatown—the world’s oldest Chinatown—and enhancing the Pasig River’s aesthetic appeal by illuminating its bridges.
“Can’t thank you enough for your support in revitalizing our Manila Chinatown and for lighting the bridges in our Pasig River,” she added.
Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Ties
The First Lady made these remarks during a thanksgiving dinner at Malacañang, held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China. The event was attended by key figures, including Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian and prominent Filipino-Chinese business leaders.
Despite ongoing tensions between Manila and Beijing over the West Philippine Sea, China remains the Philippines' largest trading partner. In 2023 alone, bilateral trade between the two nations reached approximately $41 billion.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has repeatedly emphasized the importance of diplomacy in navigating regional challenges. During last month’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Manila, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to peaceful resolutions through dialogue and cooperation.
“The Philippines has always chosen the path of peace,” the President stated, underscoring the country’s dedication to maintaining stability and prosperity in the region.
Addressing Misinformation
Meanwhile, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro dismissed recent social media rumors suggesting that the First Lady had been “detained” in the United States.
She clarified that Mrs. Marcos has no intention of taking legal action against those spreading false information about her.
“That’s not the character of the First Lady,” Castro stated in Filipino, debunking the allegations.
The Marcos administration continues to navigate diplomatic relations and national affairs with an emphasis on economic partnerships and cultural cooperation, reaffirming its stance on peaceful engagement with international allies.
