Governor Unabia Given 3 Days to Explain Alleged Sexist and Stereotypical Remarks

On Monday, April 7, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) task force gave Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia a three-day deadline to respond to concerns over a statement he made that has been widely criticized as sexist and discriminatory. The statement reportedly involved a sexist joke and stereotyping of people from the Bangsamoro region.

The task force is considering whether a formal complaint or petition for disqualification should be filed against the governor. This development comes amid heightened scrutiny over the conduct and language of public officials, especially during the sensitive election season.

COMELEC’s move signals a stronger stance against offensive and discriminatory remarks in the political arena. It also reinforces the message that candidates and public servants should be held to higher standards of respect, inclusivity, and accountability—especially when referring to marginalized communities.

This issue has sparked conversations online about political responsibility and the need for public officials to speak with care, particularly when addressing groups that have long experienced discrimination.

As of writing, Governor Unabia has not issued a public statement in response to the allegations. The public and advocacy groups now await how he will justify or clarify his remarks before the deadline lapses.
